About the event
During the Cold War, Bobby Fischer of the United States and Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union faced each other in a thrilling East-West clash dubbed the "match of the century." It was more than a sporting confrontation and has been the subject of many books and films, including the 1983 novel by Walter Tevis and the recent Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit.”
Join us to learn about the symbolic Cold War battle between the two super powers. Our guest speaker is Dr. Artemi Romanov, professor of Russian studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Besides sociolinguistics and lexicology, he studies the history of American-Russian relations and the history of sports. He is the author of several books and numerous articles, and in his new book "Sports and the Cold War" he examines the interrelationship of sports and politics during the Cold War.
